A lot of people hear the term “Fear Free®” and assume it’s simply about dogs being happy or getting lots of cuddles.
But it’s actually much deeper than that.
At Sydney Pet Sitting & Doggy Daycare, being Fear Free® Certified has genuinely changed the way we look at dog care, daycare, and socialisation.
It taught us that stress in dogs is not always obvious.
Sometimes it’s the dog zooming around wildly because they’re overstimulated.
Sometimes it’s the dog hiding behind humans.
Sometimes it’s barking, pacing, clinging, lip licking, avoiding eye contact, or struggling to settle.
And sometimes it’s simply a dog trying very hard to cope in an environment that feels too overwhelming for them.
One thing we’ve learnt over the years is that not every dog enjoys loud, busy environments filled with constant stimulation.
Some dogs absolutely love wrestling and running around with their friends all day long.
Others prefer:
calmer social interaction
sniffing around the yard
following humans everywhere
enrichment activities
observing the group from a distance
relaxing in the sunshine
And honestly, some dogs are happiest once the zoomies are over and the naps begin.
That’s why we don’t believe daycare should be about hyping dogs up all day long.
A huge part of Fear Free® care is learning to recognise how dogs communicate.
Dogs are constantly telling us how they feel through body language:
posture
facial expressions
movement
vocalisation
play style
energy levels
Sometimes dogs need space.
Sometimes they need slower introductions.
Sometimes they need a break from the group.
We really try to listen to what dogs are telling us rather than forcing interactions simply because “it’s daycare.”
A common misconception is that calmer daycare environments must be less fun.
Honestly, we find the opposite.
When dogs feel comfortable, safe, and relaxed, they often socialise better, settle better, and enjoy themselves much more naturally.
There’s still plenty of play, water fun, zoomies, toy stealing, and silly moments throughout the day — but it feels more balanced rather than chaotic.
One thing we notice every single day is how much dogs enjoy enrichment.
As soon as the lick mats and enrichment toys come out, the entire energy of the group shifts.
Dogs slow down.
They focus.
They sniff.
They relax.
We regularly use Lyka fresh food and treats in enrichment activities because the dogs absolutely love it, and it encourages calm, natural engagement rather than constant high-energy stimulation.
For many dogs, those quieter enrichment moments become their favourite part of the day.
Probably the biggest lesson Fear Free® taught us is that dogs are individuals.
Some dogs are naturally social butterflies.
Others are more sensitive or selective.
Some love action.
Others just want companionship and a comfortable place to relax.
There’s no “one size fits all” approach to daycare.
That’s why we focus on getting to know each dog’s personality properly so we can support them in ways that feel natural and comfortable for them.
At Sydney Pet Sitting & Doggy Daycare, we’ve always wanted dogs to feel genuinely comfortable while they’re with us — not simply supervised.
That’s why our approach combines:
Fear Free® care
carefully managed socialisation
enrichment using Lyka fresh food
structured downtime
a calm home-style environment
lots of individual attention
Because for us, good daycare isn’t about creating the loudest environment.
It’s about creating an environment where dogs can truly relax, enjoy themselves, and feel safe being themselves.
